Welcome to the Newbie Zone!
The Newbie Zone is to give new players basic instructions to better understand Amtgard. Amtgard is free to play but there are certain documents you should read first. These documents can be found under the publications portion of the website.
Combat System
Combat is probably the first part of Amtgard you will experience. You might go onto the field expecting to slay 100 people like your favorite hero would in a movie. Well.. bad news. That likely won't happen. Many players have been playing for years and will quickly dispatch you.
Your best bet is to single out the veteran players and simply ask for some pointers. Try to ask each of them to show you some tricks and after a few people, you will find yourself with an array of useful skills. You still won't be slaughtering people by the hundreds, but it should be enough to get you started. It is important to remember, Amtgard combat takes years to master. The only way you will improve is to get out there and fight.
Amtgard combat focuses on safety. When you first start out, try not to swing wildy as it is not very effective and can be dangerous. Your goal is to simply hit the other person hard enough for them to feel, not take their head off. Head shots NEVER count. Do not purposely aim for another players head. In the event you accidently strike another player in the head, ask them if they are okay. If they indicate they are okay, resume combat. For a list of valid shot locations, view the shot diagram.
When you are killed in combat, immediately place your weapon over your head. This indicates to other players that you are dead and they won't strike you. Likewise, don't strike players who have placed their weapons over their head.
Reeves are like a referee. They are never to be struck with a weapon, even in jest. If you have any sort of problem with another player during a game, simply talk to the reeve. Reeves are the only people that are allowed to call other peoples shots. Most larger battles will have at least one reeve.
Combat Etiquette
Amtgard's combat system is honor based. This means you and only you are responsible for calling your shots. Calling other peoples shots is also frowned upon, something that looked like a good hit from your point of view could very well of only struck their garb. If you aren't sure about shots against you, the best method is to just call it. If you show honor, other players will respect it and return the favor.
In combat you or other players may encounter obstacles such as trees or benches. Sometimes you can get carried away and not notice these obstacles. Always try to warn the other combatant as serious injuries can occur from this. Also, you would really like it if they returned the favor should you find yourself in the same situation.
In certain situations, such as a player injury or just general confusion, a hold may be called. You will know when a hold is called because someone will yell HOLD!. When a hold is called, immediately stop whatever you are doing. Wait until the hold is stopped before resuming.
Officers
Officers play a crucial role on both the local and kingdom level. When you first begin, you will be dealing with local officers, such as local monarch, local regent, local prime minister and local champion. Below is a list of officers and their basic duties.
1. Local Monarch: The local monarch is in charge of all local functions and ceremonies.
2. Local Regent: The local regent is in charge of promoting the local arts and sciences.
3. Local Prime Minister: The local prime minister is in charge of keeping accurate records for the group.
4. Local Champion: The local champion is in charge of weapon safety and ensuring the park is clean after an Amtgard function.
